Are you working or are you a student? A new US law went into effect recently that makes it hard for anyone under 21 to get their own credit card unless they have a regular job. If you 're a full-time student, you probably won 't be able to get a credit card until you graduate or turn 21. As for which card, it really doesn 't matter. Any credit card will let you charge purchases and pay them off at the end of the month. The major differences between cards are whether they charge a monthly or annual fee (you want to avoid such fees if you can), the interest rate they charge on purchases not paid off at the end of the month (the lower the interest rate the better), and the credit limit they set (the higher the limit, in general, the better). As a first-time card holder, you 'll probably have to settle for a so-so credit card at first. Once you prove you can handle it by paying off your purchases on time and not causing any late fees or penalties to be charged, you 'll have a broader choice of cards to choose from. In general, if you belong to a credit union, or one of your family members belongs to one, you 'll get a better deal than a "big name " credit card like Capitol One. Remember that as long as it 's a VISA or a MASTERCARD, it doesn 't matter whether it says Capitol One on it or Rockville Federal Credit Union (just to make up a name). |

Capital one is a good choice for first time credit cards just remember if they don 't approve you don 't apply for another credit card for at least a month. If you apply to to many places that will look like you need the money to bad and you will look like a risk to lenders. |

You are absolutely right!! Get a 'build your credit rating ' card. Capital One is an American company, so try the BarclayCard one. Pay off your bills each month and watch your rating soar. I did it at 18, never looked back. |

If you do not already have credit, then you cannot get the credit cards that you mention. Those cards are available only after you boost your credit. First, deposit money at a bank that offers secured credit cards to depositors with no credit. Next, obtain a secured credit card there. Next, build your credit using the secured credit card. Finally, if you still want one, then apply for a credit card that is not secured after you have built your credit. Do not apply for any credit card that is not secured only after you build your credit. |
